South Coast Beaches
Whale watching, surf and a string of very different beach towns
The south coast is where most Sri Lanka itineraries finish, and the beaches along it are less interchangeable than they look on a map. Between Bentota and Tangalle you can find serious surf, flat swimming bays, a working blue-whale fishery, a walled Dutch fort and stretches with almost nobody on them. The right choice depends entirely on what you want the last week to feel like.
Which beach suits you
Mirissa - whale watching capital and a good-looking crescent bay with a nightlife strip. Busy in season. Unawatuna - sheltered, shallow and calm, the easiest swimming on the coast, 15 minutes from Galle. Hikkaduwa - surf, coral sanctuary and sea turtles that come into the shallows to feed.
Bentota - the water-sports centre, on a river mouth, popular with families and closest to Colombo. Tangalle - the quiet one: long empty stretches, several strong currents, better for walking than swimming. Weligama - shallow, forgiving beach break, the place almost everyone learns to surf.
Whale watching from Mirissa
The continental shelf runs unusually close to shore here, which puts blue whales - the largest animal that has ever lived - within a few hours of the harbour. Sperm whales, fin whales and large spinner dolphin pods are also common.
The season runs roughly November to April, with December to March the most reliable. Boats leave around 6.00-6.30am and trips last 3-5 hours. Choose an operator that keeps the legal distance from the animals - crowding whales is both unethical and, increasingly, enforced.
Galle Fort
Not a beach, but the reason to be on this coast even if you never swim. The Dutch built the fortifications in the 17th century on Portuguese foundations, and the walled town inside is intact and lived in - a grid of colonial houses, cafés, boutiques and a lighthouse, best walked on the ramparts at sunset. UNESCO listed it in 1988.

South Coast Beaches - frequently asked questions
It depends on what you want. Unawatuna for calm swimming, Mirissa for whales and nightlife, Weligama to learn to surf, Bentota for water sports and families, Tangalle for quiet. They are all within about 90 minutes of each other.

November to April. The south-west monsoon makes May to September rough and wet on this coast - in those months the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is the better choice.
