The Kandy to Ella Train
Regularly named one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world
The hill-country railway from Kandy through Nanu Oya to Ella climbs through tea plantations, cloud forest and waterfalls, and is regularly listed among the world's great train journeys. The whole Kandy-Ella run takes six to seven hours; the genuinely spectacular part is the last three to four, from Nanu Oya onward. Knowing that distinction is the difference between a wonderful day and a long one.
Which section to actually ride
Kandy to Nanu Oya is pleasant but unremarkable, and it is the longer half. Nanu Oya to Ella is where the tea terraces, the viaducts, Pattipola - the highest station on the network at 1,898m - and the open-door photographs all happen.
The standard arrangement we make for guests: drive to Nanu Oya (or Nuwara Eliya, which it serves), ride the best 3-4 hours, and be met at Ella station with your luggage already in the vehicle. You get the journey without hauling bags through a crowded carriage or losing your driver for a day.
Tickets and seats
Reserved second and third class seats can be booked in advance and sell out well ahead in high season - reserve as early as you can. First class observation saloon is air conditioned with sealed windows, which is comfortable and bad for photographs.
Second class reserved is the popular choice: fans, opening windows and doors you can sit in. Unreserved third class is always available and always crowded - fine for a short hop, punishing for four hours. Sit on the right-hand side travelling from Nanu Oya to Ella for the better views.

Nanu Oya to Ella - roughly the last three to four hours. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section is longer and much less dramatic, which is why many travellers drive that leg and ride only the best part.
