The route

The drive runs through Kurunegala and Dambulla on generally good roads. Dambulla Cave Temple sits directly on the route, 20 minutes short of Sigiriya, and makes an easy first stop if you land in the morning and are not too tired.

Why start in the Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are all within 90 minutes of each other. Basing here for two or three nights covers four UNESCO World Heritage sites without moving hotels, and the onward drive to Kandy is a comfortable 2.5 hours.

It also means you climb Sigiriya at 7am on a day you control, rather than arriving at midday with a coach party.
