Negombo
The airport beach town - 15 minutes from the terminal, with a lagoon and a fish market
Negombo is the practical answer to a late arrival or an early departure: it is roughly 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, a 10-15 minute drive, against 45-60 minutes into Colombo. It is also a genuine town rather than an airport dormitory - a working fishing harbour, a wide sandy beach, a large lagoon and a Dutch-built canal running through the middle of it.
The fish market and the lagoon
The Lellama fish market runs from dawn and is the real thing - outrigger canoes coming in, the catch auctioned on the sand, fish drying in racks along the beach. Go at 6-7am or not at all.
The lagoon behind the town supports crab and prawn fisheries and can be explored by boat through the mangroves. The Dutch Canal, cut in the colonial period to move cinnamon, still runs the length of the town.
Why start or end here
Arriving in Sri Lanka after a long flight, the choice is between an hour in traffic to Colombo or fifteen minutes to a beach hotel. For departures, being fifteen minutes from check-in removes the anxiety from a 4am wake-up.
Negombo also has a strong Catholic character - it is sometimes called "Little Rome" - and St Mary's Church is worth the ten minutes it takes to look inside.
